Title: Stat. Determination of Uncertainties Associated w/Certified Values of Ion Chromatography Ref. Mat.
Presentor: Dr. Ralph Obenauf and Nimi Kocherlakota
Description:

Determine the statistical uncertainty associated with the measurement of the concentration of SPEX CertiPrep Fluoride RM, prepared to give a target value of 1,000 mg/L.

Certified value: 995 ± 5 mg/L

The 5 mg/L represents the uncertainty associated with the certified value.

Title: Measurement Uncertainty Its NELAC How Do You Approach It
Presentor: Nimi Kocherlakota
Description:

Measurements are made to:
· Accept or reject a product
· Determine if an instrument is running properly
· Assess the value of a product or service

There is always some unknown error associated with every measurement. The quantity of this unknown error can be defined as measurement uncertainty.

To determine the quality of a measured value an estimate of measurement uncertainty, which determines the confidence of measurement must be given.

Title: Determination of Trace Elements in Drinking Water by ICPMS
Presentor: Nimi Kocherlakota, Laslo Eenyei, Ralph H. Obenauf
Description:

Objective of the Study

What is in the water that you drink?
Water samples were collected from various states ranging from Arizona to Virginia.  Trace metals were determined by ICPMS and Major elements by ICP.  Hardness, Fluoride and other anions were also determined.

Title: Analytical Uncertainty
Presentor: William H. Hahn, Jr.
Description:

All analytical measurements have an associated uncertainty. All lab techniques have an associated uncertainty. We wish to promote good laboratory practices and reduce the errors at the bench as well as the regulatory level. Our goal is to show calculations, uncertainties and lab practices that will help chemists and regulators have a better understanding of analytical measurements and their limitations.

Title: Common Problems Encountered When Running Performance Testing Samples for Laboratory Accreditation
Presentor: Nimi Kocherlakota, Ralph Obenauf
Description:

*Performance Evaluation (PE) program, operated by USEPA, was privatized under NELAP as the Performance Testing (PT) Program.
*PT samples are available from PT providers, accredited in specific areas by NVLAP.
*One or two PT’s per year depending on programs.
*We will discuss common pitfalls and problems, which have caused failure for inorganic analytes, and ways to avoid them.

Title: Manufacturing, Quality Control and Characterization of SPEX CertiPrep Isotope Standards
Presentor: Nimi Kocherlakota, Ralph Obenauf, Laslo Ernyei
Description:

Why use Isotope Standards?

For the quantification of trace elements by ICPMS, using isotope dilution techniques has a number of advantages: provides high sensitivity, high accuracy, and it is easy and simple when compared to thermal/surface ioniztion mass spectrometry.

Title: Quantification of Measurement Uncertainties of Reference Materials by SPEX CertiPrep
Presentor: Ralph Obenauf, Nimi Kocherlakota
Description:

An evaluation of the total combined uncertainties of a reference material manufactured by SPEX CertiPrep is provided in the presentation below.  Erbium, prepared to give a target value of 1000 mg/L is chosen as an example.  High purity Erbium Oxide (Er2O3) which was assayed for Erbium by EDTA titration and trace impurities determined by ICP/ICPMS, was weighed accurately and then dissolved in high pure nitric acid. Erbium concentration in the solution was determined first by wet assay and then by ICP.

Please review the presentation below for more information.

Title: Calibration Strategies and Dilution Practices
Presentor: William H. Hahn, Jr.
Description:

We have observed over the years that chemists use a variety of techniques to dilute solutions and calibrate instruments. We have also observed that many techniques in common practice contain an unacceptable amount of error and uncertainty. We wish to promote good laboratory practices and reduce the errors at the bench. The goal is to show calculations, uncertainties and lab practices that will help chemists make better measurements, or understand why they do so well.
