Title: The Analysis of Laboratory and Consumer Water Sources for the Presence of BPA and Phthalates
Description: SPEX CertiPrep has just released a new white paper on the presence of bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates in water from various laboratory and consumer sources. The goal of the study was to examine the BPA and phthalate levels of several popular commercial bottled waters in comparison with municipal tap water and various samples of laboratory water from commercial sources and from de-ionized filtration systems. In addition, the study attempted to discover whether the phthalate and BPA levels increased after being heated for one week at temperatures equivalent to those reached inside an automobile during the summer.

Title: Use of Isotope Dilution Technique in Analyzing Plastic Materials
Description: The European Directive, RoHS restricts the use of hazardous substances such as Lead, Cadmium, Chromium(VI), Mercury and brominated polybihphenyl ethers in electronic and other equipment. Most of the methods currently used are not appropriate for all products tested and the results differ from method to method. It is vital to develop standard methods that produce reliable results that can be implemented by all laboratories. Isotope dilution is one of the most accurate analytical methods for concentration determination. Since all elements of interest in the RoHS directive have two or more naturally occurring isotopes, the isotope dilution technique renders an interesting solution to the determination of these elements. Results of the analysis of Mercury, Cadmium and Chromium VI in plastics by isotopic dilution will be presented.

Title: Quantification of Measurement Uncertainties of Reference Materials by SPEX CertiPrep
Description: An evaluation of the total combined uncertainties of a reference material manufactured by SPEX CertiPrep is provided in the presentation below. Erbium, prepared to give a target value of 1000 mg/L is chosen as an example. High purity Erbium Oxide (Er2O3) which was assayed for Erbium by EDTA titration and trace impurities determined by ICP/ICPMS, was weighed accurately and then dissolved in high pure nitric acid. Erbium concentration in the solution was determined first by wet assay and then by ICP.

Comments: Abstract of Presentation: The European Directive, RoHS restricts the use of hazardous substances such as Lead, Cadmium, Chromium(VI), Mercury and brominated polybihphenyl ethers in electronic and other equipment.

 | What is the difference between the 5100 Mixer/Mill and the 8000 Series Mixer/Mill?
| | | The 5100 Mixer/Mill is the smallest of the SPEX SamplePrep Mixer/Mills and is used to grind samples in the 0.5 - 1 gram range. The larger SPEX SamplePrep 8000M and 8000D Mixer/Mills generally grind samples in teh 10 gram range by using a special adapter. They can also accomodate teh smaller capacity vials traditionally used in the 5100. |
 | What type of grinding action is used in the 5100 Mixer/Mills?
| | | The high grinding and mixing efficiency of the 5100 Mixer/Mill is a result of its three-dimensional action. A one-inch (25.4 mm) component of motion along the axis of the vial is complemented by two motions at right angles to the vial axis: a 3/16 in. (4.8 mm) horizontal movement and a 1/4 in. (6.35 mm) vertical oscillation. The resulting action is consistent with the general shape and size of the vials. That is, at every stroke there is an impact at the end of the vial - over 100 per second - to crush the material rapidly and reproducibly. |
 | What type of grinding action is used in the 8000 Series Mixer/Mills?
| | | The SPEX SamplePrep 8000 Series Mixer/Mills are functionally described as shaker mills or high-energy ball mills. They shake one or two containers back and forth several thousand times a minute. In each clamp, the vial, which contains a sample and one or more balls, is shaken in a complex motion which combines back and forth swings with short lateral movements in a "figure-eight" motion. The length of the swing is the same as the internal length of the vial, about two inches (5.08 cm). With each swing balls impact against one end of the vial, simultaneously milling the sample to a powder and blending it. Due to the amplitude and velocity of the clamp's swing, each ball develops fairly high G-forces, enough to pulverize the toughest rocks, slags, and ceramics. |
 | Can I use the Mixer/Mill for mechanical alloying?
| | | Yes, over the past few decades, the SPEX SamplePrep Mixer/Mill, widely known as the "SPEX Mill," has become the industry standard for mechanical alloying applications. The high energy of the milling action, and the durability of the motor, allow running for extended periods with the addition of an optional Chip for Extended Running Time. |
 | What is the difference between the 8500 and 8530 Shatterbox?
| | | The 8530 Enclosed Shatterbox is our full-sized model and is CE-Approved. The original 8500 offers the same grinding performance as the 8530, but without the timer and cabinet. |
 | What type of grinding container materials do you offer?
| | | Shatterbox grinding containers come in a variety of materials. View our product offerings under pulverizing and blending view them all. |
 | How does the 6770 differ from the 6870 Freezer/Mill?
| | | Both Freezer/Mill models use the sample grinding action and have similar touch-screen interfaces, programmable controls. The small 6770 Freezer/Mill is designed to hold one Small Vial or one Microvial Set. Small Vials have a sample capacity of 0.4 - 4.0 mL and each Microvial has a capacity of 0.1 - 0.5 mL. The 6770 Freezer/Mill also includes a pre-cooling chamber. The larger 6870 Freezer/Mill can hold one Large Vial, one Mid-Size Vial, four Small Vials, or one Microvial Set. The Large Vial can accomodate up to 50 mL of sample and the Mid-Sized Vials have a sample capacity up to 25 mL. |
 | What sort of grinding action is used in the Freezer/Mill?
| | | SPEX SamplePrep Freezer/Mills are cryogenic mills that utilize liquid nitrogen as a coolant. The Freezer/Mill technology has been field proven since the 1960's. Chilling materials in liquid nitrogen (at temperatures approaching 200ºC) has two important consequences for sample preparation: it embrittles flexible samples so they can be pulverized by impact milling, and it preserves structural and compositional aspects usually damaged or lost during room-temperature grinding. The Freezer/Mill incorporates an insulated tub into which the liquid nitrogen is poured. The grinding mechanism is a magnetic coil assembly suspended in the liquid nitrogen bath. Each sample is placed in a closed grinding vial along with a steel impactor, and the vial is then inserted in the coil assembly and lowered into the liquid nitrogen. When the sample is thoroughly chilled - usually a matter of 10 to 15 minutes - grinding begins. The magnetic coil shuttles the impactor rapidly back and forth, pulverizing the sample against the end plugs of the vial at speeds up to 30 impacts per second. When the grinding cycle is complete, the vial is removed from the Freezer/Mill, emptied, and cleaned. |
 | Do you sell the liquid nitrogen hoses to connect to the auto/fill?
| | | Yes, we now offer a Portable Cryogenic Dewar with a 25 liter capacity, designed for storing and dispensing small amounts of liquid nitrogen. We also offer a Short Cryogenic Transfer Hose which is 4 ft. (1.2 m) in length and a Long Cryogenic Transfer Hose which is 6 ft. (1.8 m) in length. |
 | What sort of grinding action is used in the 2000 Geno/Grinder?
| | | The Geno/Grinder is designed for vigorous up-and-down shaking of deep-well titer plates, vial sets, and centrifuge tubes. The clamp moves in a strong vertical motion at speeds ranging from 500-1700 strokes/minute. |
 | How does the Geno/Grinder compare to similar products on the market?
| | | The Geno/Grinder is unique in that it uses a strong vertical shaking motion. This insures that the grinding media impacts the sample itself and not the walls of the titer plate or vial. It also prevents well-to-well contamination and eliminates the need to rotate the titer plates halfway through the grinding process. The versatility of the Geno/Grinder design enables it to accomodate a wide variety of sample containers and sample types. Not only can it be used for high-throughput cell disruption and DNA extraction, it can also be used for lysing bacteria and yeast. The list of Geno/Grinder accessories has been greatly expanded making it possible to grind a much wider range of samples. For example, the new Cryo-Blocks and related cryogenic accessories can be used for extracting RNA and proteins from both plant and animal tissue. |
 | What is the difference between the 3628 Bench-Press and 3630 X-Press?
| | | The 3628 Bench-Press is a 30-ton (27.2 metric ton), air actuated, manually controlled laboratory press. The patented air-actuation system combines the ease of use of a motorized press with the simplicity of a manual press. The 3230 X-Press is a 35-ton (31.8 metric ton), fully automated and programmable hydraulic laboratory press. It is ideal for repetitive pressing of sample pellets. |
 | What size dies do you offer?
| | | SPEX SamplePrep Die Sets are designed to fit all teh SPEX SamplePrep presses, and they are equally compatible with other standard laboratory presses using stand-alone dies. Dies are offered in 13 mm, 31 mm, 35 mm, and 40 mm diameters. |
 | What is a Sleeve-and-Plunger Set and how do I use it?
| | | Sleeve-and-Plunger Sets allow easy preparation of XRF disks with binder matrix supporting a layer of sample. They make sturdy disks, prevent damage to the die, and are ideal for smaller amounts (<1 g) of analyte. |
 | What is the difference between the K1 and K2?
| | | SPEX SamplePrep offers two reliable, automated electric fluxers for borate fusions: the Katanax K1 and K2. Both are fully programmable, and electrically powered for "Fusion Without Flames™." The single-position K1 brings low-cost automated fusion to labs with small to moderate sample throughput. The K1's ability to fuse samples and anneal glass disks at the same time can result in 50% time savings over other machines, and allows for throughput of 5 to 7 samples an hour. The five-position K2 is ideal for labs processing multiple samples. It rivals gas fluxers with its ability to process 20 to 25 samples an hour and outperforms them all in safety, simplicity, and value. |
 | What temperature will the K1 and K2 reach?
| | | The K1 can reach a temperature of 1150ºC and the K2 can reach a temperature of 1200ºC. These temperatures are more than adequate for borate fusions. |
 | How many programs can I set up in the K1 and K2?
| | | The K1 and K2 come complete with borate fusion programs for a full range of materials such as cement, ore, ceramics, and difficult samples like sulfides and metals. Fusion programs include heating time, mixing time and rate, and cooling time for glass disks or stirring time for solutions. All fusion parameters can be customized for your samples by using the multi-lingual interface. Fusion programs can be saved, renamed, deleted, or copied. Both the K1 and K2 can store up to 20 programs. |
 | Do you accept platinumware trade-ins?
| | | Yes, SPEX SamplePrep will now accept your used platinumware for credit towards your SPEX SamplePrep account. Contact customer service at 1-800-LAB-SPEX x465 or SamplePrep@spexcsp.com for details. |
 | Can I use any crucible or mold in the K1 and K2?
| | | Both the K1 and K2 will accept most common round molds, however, they require specific crucibles that can be purchased through SPEX SamplePrep. |
 | How do I know what flux to choose?
| | | Most borate fusions involve the use of lithium tetraborate (Li2B4O7 , M.P. 920ºC), lithium metaborate (LiBO4 , M.P. 845ºC), or a mixture of the two. |
 | What is a non-wetting agent?
| | | Non-wetting agents (NWA) are iodides and bromides which are added in small quantities to a fusion so the molten flux will not stick to the crucible or mold. |
 | What is the difference between the regular and pre-flared Spec-Caps?
| | | Regular Spec-Caps are painted on the outside to prevent seizure in the die and to facilitate labeling. They are offered in 30 mm, 33 mm, and 38 mm diameters. An Edge-Flaring Tool is sold separately and can be used to widen the Spec-Cap rim to ensure a snug fit against the walls of the die, thus preventing sample loss and pellet jamming. Pre-Flared Spec-Caps have an unpainted surface and are 31 mm in diameter. They may be substituted for the 30 mm regular Spec-Cap in all applications where flaring is recommended thus eliminating the need for the Edge-Flaring Tool. |
 | How do I select the correct thin film window for my application?
| | | When choosing a thin film window for your application, you need to consider film characteristics such as strength, transmission, uniform thickness, purity, and chemical attack. |
 | What brand XRF machines are your X-Cells compatible with?
| | | SPEX SampePrep X-Cells are designed to fit into the major suppliers of XRF spectrometers such as PANalytical, Rigaku, Bruker, and Thermo instruments. The requirements of the application will dictate the type of X-Cell and which window material to use. |

 | How do I prevent my antimony oxide (Sb2O3) solution from becoming a gelatin when I dissolve it in tartaric acid? SPEX CertiPrep Laboratory Manager Vanaja Sivakumar says, "This is a great question with a very easy solution. While Sb2O3 dissolves easily in tartaric acid and water, the solution is clear at first but a gelatin like substance can form over time. This is a form of mold. Adding a trace amount of nitric acid to the solution can prevent this. Thanks for asking." |

Great question, here are examples based on the most popular IC Standards we offer: 1000 ug/mL Nitrate = 226 ug/mL Nitrogen 1000 ug/mL Phosphate = 326 ug/mL Phosphorus 1000 ug/mL Nitrate-Nitrogen = 1000 ug/mL Nitrogen 1000 ug/mL Phosphate-Phosphorus = 1000 ug/mL Phosphorus 1000 ug/mL Nitrate = 305 ug/mL Nitrogen 1 1000 ug/mL Sulfate = 334 ug/mL Sulfur 1000 ug/mL Nitrite-Nitrogen = 1000 ug/mL Nitrogen 1000 ug/mL Sulfate-Sulfur = 1000 ug/mL Sulfur |

 | Why should the acid concentration in the sample be similar to the standard it is measured against?
The density, viscosity and surface tension of the matrix have considerable effect on the droplet size of the aerosol. Only fine droplets are transported to the plasma torch. Matching the acid concentration of the sample and the standard helps in transporting similar quantity of droplets (from both the solutions) to the torch thus improving the accuracy. |

 | Question: What are the conditions that lead to zero reading in a Certified Reference Material and how to avoid them?
Answer from our Spectroscopist: To avoid conditions that lead to zero reading in a Certified Reference Material, follow the below steps.
- Check the sample introduction system. Nebulizer should be clean. Tubes connecting nebulizer, peristaltic pumps and autosampler should be tight.
- Check the spectrum of the element in question. Center the position of the peak.
- Check the blank for any contamination.
- If the CRM is diluted, use the appropriate matrix and adequate acids for dilution.
- Analyze the solution at different concentration than the one used (preferably two times higher or lower).

 | Question: What is Isopiestic distillation? Can it be used to purify acids?
Answer from our Spectroscopist: Volatile acids such as Hydrochloric acid can be purified by Isothermal Distillation also known as Isopiestic Distillation. Place an open beaker containing reagent grade acid and a open beaker containing high purity water within a closed system at room temperature. An empty desiccator can be used to create such a closed system. Acid vapors will be continuously transferred to the high purity water until an equilibrium is established between the two solutions. This should be accomplished in 12 to 24 hours creating high purity acid from the water, at a lower concentration than that of the original reagent grade acid, of course. This method can also be used to purify ammonia as well. |

 | Question: A customer who ordered the following standards wants to know the best way to store his standards: nitrate, nitrite phosphate, and sulfate. Currently he is storing all his standards in the same way: at 4 degrees C +/- 2 degrees. Before he is ready to use the standard, he brings it to room temperature and then runs his analysis. The certificate of analysis does not contain information about storing standards at 4 degrees. As the manufacturer of the standards, the customer wants to know what we would recommend in terms of storing the standard.
Answer: As per our Certificate of Analysis, the stock anion standards such as nitrate, nitrite phosphate and sulfate, and others are guaranteed stable to +/- 0.5% of the certified concentration for a period of 1 year if materials are kept tightly capped and stored under normal conditions of temperature (50-80 degree F) and Humidity (30-80%). Refrigeration is not required. If for any reason refrigeration is required, bring the standard(s) to room temperature before using. |
